Abstract:

Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the meniscus is essential for appropriate treatment. The unique anatomy of the medial and lateral meniscus and blood supply play an important role in decision making. Controversy exists regarding the optimal treatment of meniscal tears including debridement, repair, root repair, and transplantation. The unique tear location and morphology thus plays an essential role in determination of appropriate treatment. Repair is generally advised in tear types with healing potential to preserve meniscal function and joint health.
